Best family trips in the Krkonose Mountains

In the Krkonose Mountains it is often uphill, but the paths lead through a landscape that you and your children will love. How do we know? Because we've tried all the recommended routes with our own kids!

The key to success lies in perfect planning, motivation and a good snack. We'll be happy to help you with the first and second point.

With children to Snezka

It's possible with little ones, bigger ones and strollers. We have prepared several route options for you.

Snezka is the queen of the Czech mountains and it is obvious that you want to give your children the joy of climbing it. Especially if they already have some Krkonose kilometres in their legs and want to dare to climb the highest mountain. It's definitely possible and we will be happy to help you. In this case, good planning and preparation are the difference between a top holiday experience and disappointment. 

Choose the off-season, weekdays and early mornings. During the summer months, holidays and weekends, Snezka is under siege and the queue for the cable car from Pec pod Snezkou is endless. Its summit becomes an anthill, with a never-ending stream of tourists.

Hike length 6.4 km - suitable for strollers

The forest park at the top of the Straz hides 4 imaginative lookouts made of wood and steel. Their shape and names are linked to the symbols that historically belonged to the town's emblem. You can climb the Fox, the Bear, the Sheep and the Miner. They offer adventurous climbing on ladders and stone steps as well as beautiful views of the valley and the western ridges. 

Park your car in Frantiskov, part of Rokytnice nad Jizerou. Just cross the road and you are on the red marked path that will lead you to the viewpoints.

Length 6.2 km (variant from Medvědín 9.5 km) - not suitable for strollers

There are places in the Krkonose Mountains that everyone wants to visit. The source of the Labe River, the Labsky and Pancavsky waterfall are certainly ones of them. And that's why the crowds head here. A trip to them is best enjoyed outside the summer season and with respect to the fragile nature around you.

With the youngest children, choose the route from Horni Misecky, where a regular bus line will take you to Zlate navrsi hill. With more fit little hikers, take the cable car from Spindleruv Mlyn to Medvedin to the excellent Medanek playground and then head upwards on your own. 

If you want to go with a stroller, then choose the yellow route from Zlate navrsi hill in both directions. 

Length 7.5 km - suitable for prams

A cool trail with wonderful views that actually goes downhill almost all the time. Leave your car in Janske Lazne at the lower cable car station. Let us take you to the top of Cerna Hora and head past the Cernohorske peat bog, Kolinska bouda and the meadow enclave of Luciny to Pec pod Snezkou. To get back to Janske Lazne, you can use the regular bus lines or the TOURBUS that runs within the resorts of the SkiResort CERNA HORA - PEC.

Length 4 km (longer option to Pec 6.6 km) - suitable for strollers

Giant ants, lynx or vipers scurry through the meadows and forests above Portasovy boudy chalets. Climb up a deer's antlers or into a stork's nest. The Pecka playing landscape is simply a playground like no other! Moreover, you can reach it comfortably by cable car, and then you can choose the way back on your own. The shorter route leads straight back to Velká Úpa, the longer one to Pec pod Sněžkou, where you can join the playful nature trail to the Krakonos´s confessional. 

Length of our recommended route 6.3 km - suitable for off-road buggies

Fairy tales are inseparable from the Krkonose Mountains. And who wouldn't know the ones by Marie Kubátová. Recall them together with your children on the Fairy Tale Trail in Horni Mala Upa. There are 10 stops full of stories and games set in the magical landscape of Mala Upa.

The whole trail is quite long, so we recommend a 6 km circuit, which you can manage even with strollers.

Length 8.3 km - not suitable for prams

A pleasant and easy route that you will enjoy. Take the bus to Spindleruv Mlyn and from there head up the red ridge. On the way you can read the information panels for the Profesora Fanty educationat trail and then turn onto the Krkonosska zviratka nature trail. Children will learn a lot of interesting facts about the typical inhabitants of the Krkonose Mountains and if they keep their eyes peeled, they will also meet them in person. 

Length 5.5 km - suitable for off-road buggies

Benecko is nicknamed "the air spa", for the local fresh air (luft). It's a resort high in the mountains yet well equipped for summer holidays. Or a trip. For example, head to the Zaly lookout tower for a distant circular view. A playful educational Sojci trail and a 3D maze - a short walk from the car park will take the kids back to Benecko.

Length 4.5 km - suitable for prams

Handmade, original, colourful and sparkling Christmas decorations have been born in Ponikla for more than a hundred years. Watch with your children how the magical glass ornaments are made and try your hand at making them yourself. 

Start your trip in Martinice. Get on the train at the unique railway station and take a ride on the Jizera Pacifik train line. Pick up the game Ride with the Count at the station for the journey. Get off at the Poniklá stop. From the train station, take the yellow line, From the train station, take the yellow line, then cross the main road and pass the the municipal office, you'll go up the back roads.

About the Jizera Pacifik train line

Length 5.7 km - not suitable for pushchairs (the surface paths around the peat bog are unavoidable)

The CERNOHORSKY EXPRESS cable car will take you to the top of Cerna hora Mt. daily during the summer. Right at the station there is a Kid Park Kabinka, which children will not want to miss. Just around the corner you can climb the Panorama viewing tower and then go for a relaxing walk to the unique Cernohorske peat bog. You can go back to Janske Lazne on a scooter. And at the end of the day, run into the treetops on the Krkonose Trail and into Emil's forest world that belongs to it. 

Length 2.5 km - suitable for strollers and the smallest hikers

A short walk along the Mumlava River is ideal for the little ones. If you are going with a stroller, then you will walk in both directions along the asphalt path marked in blue. With small children who can already pinch something on their own, turn onto the yellow-marked playful Fox Trail.

Finally, we recommend a visit to the Sindelka Forestry and Hunting Exhibition, which will teach you about logging and introduce you to the forest inhabitants of the Krkonose Mountains in an interactive way.
With older children or those sleeping in a pram, you can go up to the Krakonos's breakfast. Then it's nearly 12 km.
