Which route to take to Snezka? And when to make it a worthy experience? We will advise you!

On the panorama of the rounded Krkonose peaks looms the unmissable pointed crown of Queen Snezka. It is the only one in the country close to the mountains. It stands in both the Czech Republic and Poland. In our country, we revere it with the title "the highest". And it is also the most visited mountain because of these exceptional features.

Today is your day! Your peak awaits you!“

Theodor Seuss Geisel

If you are going to stand on its summit, we will be happy to advise you on the choice of route. But we will also remind you when to go to Snezka and what to look out for. It is in the interest of us, you and the Krkonose nature that we ensure respectful and responsible tourists to Snezka.

The most beautiful routes to Snezka

From Pec pod Snezka through the Obri Dul

Between Snezka, Pec pod Snezkou and Studnicni hora, the Upa glacier has sculpted one of the wonders of the Krkonose Mountains. A mass of ice 4 kilometres long and up to 100 metres thick has carved a massive valley called the Obri dul into the landscape. On the trail you will climb steadily, walk 6.6 kilometres and climb a total of 817 metres.

You can take the cable car back to Pec or descend along the yellow and green trail, which almost follows the route of the cable car. If you fancy a longer trip, then continue to Lucni bouda, Vyrovka and from there descend to Pec along the green and red hiking trail.

From Spindleruv Mlyn

From the well-known centre of the central Krkonose Mountains you can climb to Snezka by several beautiful routes. If you want to avoid the high altitude, then take the regular bus from Spindleruv Mlyn to Spindlerova Bouda and from there take the red ridge path of Czech-Polish friendship. You can enjoy the rush of mountain water on the trail through the Bile Labe Valley. We recommend the challenging but beautiful route along the slopes of the Kozi hrbety Ridge. You can return along the Bile Labe. In total you will cover 25 kilometres.

From Mala Upa

From Mala Upa it seems to be a stone's throw to Snezka. But don't be fooled, it will still be a challenging trip. You can choose more routes. You can reach the Jelenka chalet by the yellow trail, which is asphalted and suitable for strollers or cyclists, the red forest trail or the blue ridge trail. According to the locals, the latter is the most beautiful. In addition, you can climb a total of four thousanders - Celo, Tabule, Svorova hora and Snezka.

You can return back via Ruzovohorske sedlo on the green trail. In total, you will walk 16.3 kilometres there and back.

From Velka Upa

The journey from Velka Upa can be easily managed even with children if you let at least one of the cable cars help you. From Velka Upa, there is a chairlift to Portasovy boudy, where you can get off right at the unique playground. Ants, lynx and storks have grown up a bit here and invite you to adventure. Expect to be here for a while, though. The yellow trail will take you to the top of Snezka. You can either return the same way or walk from Portasky along one of the trails. For a quick return, use the cable car from Snezka to Pec pod Snezkou.

To Snezka with children

Even with the little ones in a stroller or carrier. But it's hard work, even with the use of a cable car. If you dare, check out our three recommended routes. If you're counting on using the cable car, read below for information on its operation. In the summer season, beware of long queues at the lower station, which would certainly not be fun for children.

Useful information and advice

On a nice summer day, 12,000 people can be on Snezka in one day. An average of 120 people a day go to the sunrise. So if you want to enjoy the hike to the highest peak in Bohemia in peace, choose the off-season.

If it is not in your power to avoid the summer holidays, then go early in the morning and always on a weekday.

The summit of Snezka may seem like a bare rock, but it is in fact a valuable environment shaped during the Ice Age. Even the stone scree is an important natural heritage that must be left to natural processes. Alpine meadows here are home to species typical of the Arctic tundra some of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. From a natural science perspective, the environment on Snezka is truly irreplaceable.

The country’s highest mountain is also one of its most extreme places. The average annual temperature on Snezka is just around 0.2°C, and it receives a high amount of both rain and snowfall. This cold climate means the growing season—the time when nature can grow, reproduce, and recover from human impact is three times shorter. Even a discarded fruit peel will take three times longer to decompose.

That’s why the protective fences say: stay on the path!

The cable car is open all year round and, with the exception of April and November, is always open daily (in April and November it is only open on weekends from 8 am to 6 pm).

  • From May to the end of September it runs from 8am to 7pm, outside these months until 6pm.
  • The cable car route has two sections: Pec pod Snezkou - Ruzova hora and Ruzova hora - Snezka. However, you do not have to change trains.
  • The operation of the cable car is affected by the weather, and in bad weather conditions the operation of the second section in particular may be restricted.
  • The cable car has a limited capacity (2,500 people/day) due to nature protection, especially in the summer months it is very busy and the queue is not an exception.

Current operation of the cable car

In the high season, due to the high number of visitors, the movement along the routes is usually regulated. You can only ascend to Snezka from the Obri sedlo  by the red "chain trail", and descend down the Polish side by the red and then blue Jubilee Trail.

The most beautiful view of Snezka is not from the top

The most beautiful view of Snezka is not from the top. Admire the queen of the Czech mountains from the surrounding trails

If reaching the summit is not your main driving force, then know that Snezka is much more beautiful from afar. Pay tribute to it from the opposite hill. Look at it from different angles, admire it. When you stand on top of it again one day, you'll somehow be more deserving.
