Autumn days are usually still long and warm enough to enjoy them on the Krkonose mountain ridges. Run along them without any major restrictions, crowds or queues. During the summer it is better to avoid some parts of the mountains and take lesser-known paths.
In autumn, treat yourself to Snezka, the source of the Elbe, the Snezne jamy and enjoy iconic places before the snow falls.
For picturesque landscapes and good beer to Mala Upa
This route leads from Pomezni Boudy to Lysecinska Hora and from there to Alberice and back. It is not demanding in terms of elevation and climbing hills. Moreover, it is full of resting places and shelters.
Albeřice is a place where the sunny meadows of the Krkonose Mountains have been preserved, as well as log cabins reminding how people used to live and farm in the mountains. And if you are lucky with the weather, you will also enjoy a beautiful view of Snezka.
We recommend a stop at the Trautenberk brewery and a taste of their original beer.
The route is 17.5 kilometres long.
To Snezka in autumn
Are you going to climb Snezka from Pec? Autumn is the perfect time! The Obri dul is beautiful at any time of the year, and in autumn it will be almost empty. You won't have to wait in long lines for the cable car, and you'll enjoy the views at the top without the crowds behind you. Will you walk down past the Lucni bouda? A boardwalk will lead you to it through the brown-golden Upske peat bogs and the smell of blueberry pies.
But you can also start from Portasky. A chairlift will take you to them and if you are going with children, you can enjoy the Pecka Games Landscape and the excellent Krkonose cuisine at the Portasky Mountain Chalet together. You can also stay here and experience autumn romance on the Krkonose ridges.
Through the Modry dul to Vyrovka
Modry dul is a beautiful mountain valley with several original cottages, which are listed as a protected ensemble of original mountain architecture. Visit this charming, quiet spot beneath the massif of the Luční and Studnicni Mountains before you start the long climb to Richter's Huts and Vyrovka. The view of the Modry dul is also magnificent from here. Via Chalupa na Rozcesti, follow the green trail back to Pec.
The length of the route is 15 km.
From Spindleruv Mlyn to Kotelni jamy
A beautiful ridge hike to the Kotelni Jamy, which is said in fairy tales to be where Krakonos boils fog and hides wild winds. At the beginning, feel free to let the cable car help you, from Medvedin it is an easy climb to the Zlate navrsi. You will enjoy the Hanc and Vrbata Mound and the Kotel viewpoint. The Kotelni jamy in autumn is impressive, coloured with leaves, heather and red Sudeten crane berries.
The route is 17 kilometres long.
Through the valley of the White Elbe to Kozi hrbety
The White Elbe is a lovely Krkonose river that bounces over rocks in rapids and overcomes cascades in tiny waterfalls. Its frothy water evokes the colour white, hence the apt name. The trail upstream is initially a pleasant walk, but later turns into a climb on real mountain paths. At the end of the climb, you can rest at the Lucni bouda.
Return to Spindleruv Mlyn on the red trail. The Krakonos lookout and the path along the slopes of the Kozi hrbety are among the most beautiful experiences.
The route is 17 kilometres long.
Over the source of the Elbe to the Snezne jamy
If you wish to visit the symbolic source of the Elbe, but do not want to go back like most tourists, you can extend your hike by climbing the Snezne jamy. Walk through paths lined with violet heather and look down into the 200+ metre deep karsts, where pools glisten at the bottom. Then run down the Horse Path to the Labska bouda, and don't forget to stop at the Stone Well. The Labsky dul and the Labský and Pancavsky waterfall await you.
The route is 19.6 kilometres long.
From Rokytnice via Dvoracky to Harrachov
A pleasant trip on which you will get to know two important resorts of the western Krkonose Mountains. You will start in Rokytnice with a view from the tower of the town hall. You will go to the Hutsky waterfall, which winds through the beech forests like a glittering ribbon and then falls from a height of 20 metres. Especially in autumn, when the red leaves fall from the beeches, it is a beautiful sight. Refreshments on the terrace of the Stumpovka restaurant near Dvoracky with a view will delight you. And then head along the Mumlava River towards Harrachov. Even its riverbed is coloured with red beech leaves. Just like the Mumlava Waterfall, the most watery of all the Krkonose.
The route is 13.5 kilometres long.
Across the Pacific to the land of lost patriots
Pojizersky Pacifik is a local railway line winding along the Jizera River on the route Martinice v Krkonosich - Rokytnice nad Jizerou. It will take you through the western Krkonose Mountains and allow you to watch the scenery outside your window in peace. Board the train in Martinice and park your car comfortably. The building and the whole station area will take you back to the past, when steam engines ran around and soot dust swirled in the air. The local Railway Museum will tell you why the station is unique and what hasn't changed since the last century.
The train in the direction of Rokytnice departs every two hours (always at odd hours). Get off in Jablonec nad Jizerou and follow the old Krkonose paths to Paseky nad Jizerou - the land of the forgotten patriots.
Magical views from Vysoke nad Jizerou
The picturesque town of Vysoke nad Jizerou is the right place for a peaceful autumn walk. Enjoy the views in all directions that never get old. Whether you go to the Marinka Cross, the statue of St. Josef in Sklenarice or other recommended places, you will see the colourful panoramas that only the Krkonose Mountains offer.
What if it's not for a hike?
