From Rokytnice nad Jizerou to Paseky to See the Lost Patriots
Let’s take a trip through the western parts of the Krkonose Mts., via a town which served as the model for the famous novel The Lost Patriots by the local writer Karel Vaclav Rais, a town where the wind always blows, and the place where traditional glass bead Christmas tree decorations have been made for many years.
In Rokytnice nad Jizerou, the town where the traditional Smugglers’ Convention is held every year, take cycle track 22 to the west via Letni Strana to Paseky nad Jizerou. It is one of the Krkonose’s most valuable sites of rural architecture, featuring many timbered houses with the typical gable decorations. In a beautiful natural setting, you will find the Memorial to Lost Patriots, built in honour of local teacher Venceslav Metelka. In Paseky, turn left onto the 17A cycle track called the Greenway Jizera, and continue via Sklenarice to Vysoke nad Jizerou, a town high in the hills above the Jizera River where the wind always blows. Besides the museum of local geography and ethnography and the Krakonos Theatre Association, which holds a festival of amateur theatre every year, the town of Vysoke attracts visitors to its Art-Nouveau Villa Kramar, once the residence of the prime minister of the so-called First Czechoslovak Republic, now “only” a hotel. Follow cycle track 4295 to Ponikla where you can take a guided tour of the production of traditional glass bead Christmas decorations. Continue to Jestrabi v Krkonosich and turn left onto the K8 cycle track which will take you to Frantiskov. Join cycle track 22 to return to Rokytnice nad Jizerou.
