The Elbe route

Cycling from the Krkonose Mountains along the Elbe to the North Sea

The Elbe River is one of the great treasures that were born on the territory of the Krkonose Mountains. Like a silver and life-giving thread it winds through the mountains and the lowlands. Join this river on its pilgrimage and let it be your guide as you travel through the Czech and German countryside.

Cycling along the river bank

The extraordinary cycling tour on the Elbe Trail along the Elbe River is one of the most charming and diverse long-distance cycling routes in Europe. More experienced cyclists can take more challenging routes along the public roads from town to town through which the Elbe flows.

The Elbe Route is not boring

The marked long-distance cycle route, marked 2 - Elbe Route, winds along a total length of about 1300 km along one of Europe's most beautiful rivers. It takes you almost from the source of the Elbe through Benecko in the Krkonose Mountains to Podkrkonosi, through the regional capitals, the Bohemian Central Highlands to Bohemian and Saxon Switzerland, to the Czech-German border, from there it continues across central Germany to end its journey in the port of Cuxhaven, where the Elbe flows into the North Sea.

The surface is easy to drive on

In recent years, miles of trail have been constructed in a safe bikeway mode, where only non-motorized vehicles have access. The flat profile and service facilities make the trail suitable for families with children.

The Elbe Route in the Krkonose Mountains

Whether you start or end at the spring, you can't miss it. In the Krkonose Mountains, cycle route 2 leads through Hostinne to Vrchlabi. Here, the markings end in Herlikovice at the lower station of the chairlift to Zaly. During the summer season, the cable car will take you and your bike to the Zaly lookout tower, from where you can continue along the K10 cycle route to Benecko and then along the K13 route to Tridomi. From there, you can take the K11 route down to Spindleruv Mlyn. From Spindleruv Mlyn you can take the chairlift to Medvedin. From Medvedin, take the K13A trail to the Masaryk Road (K13) and continue via Vrbatova chalet to Labska chalet. You can't go any further on your bike, so store it here and walk to the symbolic source of the Elbe.
