Get to know the Krkonose Mountains on hikes, short trips and multi-day hikes

If you have proper shoes and enough determination to get to places that fill you with joy, then the Krkonose Mountains are a great choice for you!

They're criss-crossed with hiking trails that at one point meander peacefully through the valley, at another climb proudly upwards until they disappear over the horizon, and sometimes twist like meanders of the Elbe to reach the summit. Choose from shorter trails and longer routes. Wander along the ridges and through the foothills.

Crossing the Krkonose Mountains from hut to hut

The Krkonose Mountains offer a refuge for everyone who can appreciate the rugged beauty and tranquillity of nature and perceive it with other eyes. We invite such pilgrims to cross the Krkonose Mountains. How to do it? There are several options. Go from Harrachov to Žacléř or in the opposite direction. Think of the crossing as a three-day trip or a week-long holiday. You can follow the border stones right along the ridge or enjoy the atmosphere of picturesque valleys sounding with the gurgling of streams and waterfalls.

The essential advice is - take your time! Take advantage of the hospitality of the mountain lodges and enjoy uninterrupted days and nights on the Krkonose ridges.

When and which way to Snezka

Who wouldn't want to climb to the top of the highest Czech mountain at least once in their life and look down on the landscape below them from a height of 1603 metres? Definitely don't deprive yourself of this experience, but choose the off-season and ideally weekdays. During July and August it is much more beautiful to gaze at Snezka from afar and keep it calm and dignified in your imagination.

Are you in the mountains outside of July and August? Or are you undeterred by the crowds at the summit? Then we have prepared four routes for you to climb Snezka.

The Czech-Polish Friendship Trail

Magnificent views of the Czech Republic and Poland, the highest ridges of the Krkonose Mountains and unique places - this is a summary of what the Czech-Polish Friendship Trail has to offer. This red marked hiking trail crosses 28 kilometres of the Krkonose Mountains from Tvaroznik to Pomezni Boudy. It follows the Czech-Polish border, but in some places it also crosses it. You can connect to the route from many places, walk the whole route or just a part of it.

Picturesque places under the mountains

You pass through them on your way to the mountains and look down on them from the Krkonose ridges. The foothill villages pulsate with culture and tradition, or sit quietly in a landscape that ripples a little less, but smells, blooms and invites you to take a walk. They preserve Krkonoše values, architecture and original crafts.

The foothills are the lifeblood from which the mountain ranges grow, and together they form one perfect whole.

Useful information for your trip

The Krkonose Mountains are the only Czech mountains with alpine character. The climate on their ridges has its own specifics and risks due to such a high altitude. Therefore, it is a good idea to familiarize yourself with them before you set off on a hike and, above all, to prepare well for them.

Remind yourself of the basic rules of safe movement, hiking equipment and rules of behaviour in the national park.

How to be prepared

Take advantage of the ropeways in the Krkonose Mountains from spring to autumn. They take hikers, cyclists with bicycles and mothers with strollers to the mountain ridges at regular intervals.

Choose a cable car

Krkonose cyclobuses will transport pedestrians and cyclists with bicycles. Nine lines will also take you to places you cannot otherwise reach by regular bus. They run from the end of May to the end of September.

Timetables

The weather in the Krkonose Mountains changes from minute to minute, the clouds are moving fast and the strong mountain winds can really blow even with an otherwise reliable forecast. Before you head out, check out the webcams to get an idea of what it looks like on the ridges.

Even if it's down to a tank top, the climate can be completely different up there and you'll be pulling your jacket out as soon as you get off the lift. Don't get caught off guard!
