After the Emperor-to-be Joseph II visited Mala Upa in 1779, he decided that a church should be built in the village to promote his religious policy. The Baroque church was built in 1788-1789 and, at an altitude of 975 m a.s.l., is one of the highest located churches in Bohemia. The church was dedicated to St. Peter and Paul in 1791 and is situated directly in the historical centre of Mala Upa. Unfortunately, after being struck by lightning on 10 September 1806 at 8.45 p.m., the wooden church burnt down. Construction works on a new church began immediately, and the first service was held on 18 October 1807. The church was renewed to a greater extent in 1889 and the last repair was carried out in 1986 in difficult circumstances.
